Know Cosmetics Skin Disease and How to Prevent it

Cosmetics and beauty products should make facial and body skin look healthier and more attractive. However, if the product used contains hazardous ingredients or is not suitable for skin types, skin diseases can occur due to cosmetics. Cosmetic products are very diverse, ranging from shampoo, soap, deodorant, makeup, sunscreen, hair dye, nail polish, cream, and facial serum. Cosmetics that contain irritative ingredients, such as AHA, alcohol, fragrance, parabens, or tretinoin, can cause problems or diseases of the skin. Symptoms can occur instantaneously

Skin Diseases due to Cosmetics

Skin disease can occur when the skin is exposed to cosmetics and preservatives in cosmetics, such as parabens, formaldehyde, formalin, imadazolidinyl urea, isothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, and quaternium-15. In addition, skin diseases can also be triggered by aluminum content, salicylic acid, sodium lauret sulfate, and metals, such as mercury and chromium. Here are some skin diseases that can be caused by using cosmetics:

1. Contact dermatitis

Cosmetics and body care products that come in direct contact with the skin can cause contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis itself is divided into two types, namely:
  • Irritant contact dermatitis

  • Occurs when cosmetic ingredients irritate your skin. Skin irritation can occur within minutes, days, or weeks after using cosmetics. The skin becomes reddish, feels sore, stung, itchy, blisters, or even secretes when it is scratched.
  • Allergic contact dermatitis

  • Allergy to the skin occurs due to an immune system reaction to ingredients in cosmetics. Symptoms in the form of itching, redness, and swelling can occur on your neck, face, ears, eyes and lips. The reaction usually appears around 12-48 hours after the skin is exposed to cosmetics. The label 'does not cause irritation', 'hypoallergenic', and 'passing the sensitivity test' does not guarantee the product is fully safe and will not cause allergies or skin disorders. This is because the trigger for allergies in each person is different.
Allergic or irritant reactions are sometimes difficult to distinguish. There are times when a person can experience a combination of both.

2. Urticaria

Urticaria or biduran is characterized by the appearance of rashes, skin feels sore, tingling, and itching. These symptoms usually appear several minutes to about 1 hour after the skin is exposed to cosmetics, and can improve by itself within 24 hours.

3. Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that is rare but can be fatal. This disease is characterized by difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

How to Prevent Skin Diseases caused by Cosmetics

Most skin diseases due to the use of cosmetics generally can subside by themselves after the use of cosmetics is stopped. But to avoid serious side effects, it's good to do prevention in the following ways:
  • Choose products with the least chemical ingredients, to prevent allergic reactions.
  • Choose fragrance and alcohol free products.
  • Use water-based products and non-comedogenic (does not clog pores).
  • To reduce the risk when using perfume, spray perfume on clothes and not directly on the skin.
  • Before using cosmetics, do the test by applying a little product to the skin. Wait 2-3 days, and watch the reaction on the skin. Do not use the product if it appears reddish, itchy, sore, or swollen on the skin.
If skin diseases appear after using cosmetics, these symptoms can be relieved by over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams. But avoid using it on the face without consulting it first to the doctor. In addition, stop using cosmetics and apply cold compresses and skin moisturizers to help relieve symptoms of skin problems that arise. If the symptoms of skin diseases due to cosmetics do not improve, immediately go to a dermatologist to get the right treatment.
